Bench Top Tool Cart
Bench top power tools can be pretty handy. But my collection of these tools
got to be larger than the bench space I had to accomodate them. Consequently,
I was always having to rearrange them on the bench — with no small
effort.
Finally, I got smart. I decided to make all this tool moving a little easier
by putting each one on its own rolling cart.
Each cart starts with a sturdy base made from a piece of ¾″ plywood. As you can see in the drawing, the base is sized slightly larger than the footprint of the tool. A 3/8″-deep recess is routed into the base to hold the tool in place. Four wooden wheels are mounted to each cart as shown in detail 'b.'
Finally, I needed a way to keep the cart from rolling when using the tool.
To do this, I drilled a couple of holes in the front of each cart that
matched the spacing of the dog holes in my bench. A pair of bolts through
these holes and into the bench firmly anchors the cart while I get down to
business (detail 'a').
